Chiropractic and Children

Paediatric chiropractic is first and foremost generally considered to be safe but occasionally may be associated with possible adverse reactions in individual cases. The initial consultation includes an examination and information gathering about expected development for the child, known as 'developmental milestones'. Compromise to the neuromuscular system can impair normal development, and common problems encountered include a lack of early gross motor skills.

This includes the inability to turn the head fully, roll over, sit independently, crawl in a cross pattern and late walking. Infantile colic and reflux may be manifestations of problems in the neuromuscular system, or perhaps your child has physical, emotional or social challenges or difficulty with immune deficiencies or weakness. These challenges respond favourably to paediatric chiropractic. The benefits of chiropractic care for children have become increasingly evident as the number of children receiving chiropractic care continues to rise. Chiropractic research has overwhelmingly shown the benefit of chiropractic care for children.

Why do kids see a chiropractor?

Children have many physical stresses to deal with during their growing years, and problems in children’s spines can occur at almost any point in their development and growth. An aggravating factor of many newborn health complaints such as colic, reflux, breastfeeding difficulties, sleep disturbances and chronic infections can often be traced to irritation to the nervous system caused by spinal and cranial misalignments. Many developmental milestones such as learning to hold up the head, sitting upright, crawling and walking are all activities that affect spinal alignment and are important times to have a child checked by a specialised chiropractor, not to mention the falls, sports injuries, playground bumps and heavy school bags to which they are subjected in later years. Adult back pain and spinal disorders may stem from childhood activities.

Signs to look out for that may necessitate a kids chiropractor.

Unless a child has an obvious problem, it can be difficult for a parent to recognise when their spine is not working correctly. There are some signs, however, which can indicate spinal problems. These include:

  • Disturbed sleeping patterns

  • Breastfeeding difficulties in the very young

  • Restricted head or neck movement to one side

  • One shoulder higher than the other

  • Recurrent ear infections

  • Persistent sore throats and colds

  • Colic/reflux

  • Scoliosis

  • Headaches

  • Bedwetting and/or constipation

  • Growing pains

Chiropractors are uniquely positioned to educate parents, teachers and students about spinal health care through their minimum five years of university training. Each week, there are approximately 200,000 visits to Australian chiropractors for a broad range of reasons.

A Chiropractic consultation can identify potential spinal dysfunction and help avoid many of the back problems and health complaints that are seen later as adults.
