Back to School: Prioritising Spinal Health

January is a busy time as families prepare for the return of millions of Australian children to school. While organising uniforms and school supplies, don’t forget to focus on your child’s spinal health and overall well-being.

Children spend a significant part of their year sitting at desks, carrying backpacks, and using devices, all of which can impact their posture and spinal development. Small habits, like how they wear their backpack or sit during class, can make a big difference over time.

To help families prepare, the Australian Chiropractors Association (ACA) has created resources, including:

  • A Back to School Health Checklist to promote daily spinal health habits.

  • Flyers on backpack safety and correct sitting posture to reduce strain and improve posture.

These tools are designed to help students build healthy habits and empower parents to encourage independence in their children.

Tips for a Healthy School Year

  • Wear backpacks correctly: Use both shoulder straps and ensure the bag is not too heavy.

  • Sit with proper posture: Avoid slouching at desks or while using devices.

  • Stay active: Swap extended screen time for outdoor play.

  • Eat a balanced diet: Good nutrition supports growing bodies and minds.

If you’re concerned about your child’s spinal health, chiropractors are here to help. Early guidance can make a lasting impact on your child’s well-being, helping them grow into strong, healthy adults.
